4 Reasons You Need Professional Makeup For a Photo Shoot
Who remembers the first few cycles of America’s Next Top Model? Week-to-week, we watched the contestants transform from just another pretty face to a fierce *Tyra Voice* model in hopes of winning a coveted modeling contract. I don’t know about you, but for me, it wasn’t just about tracking the contestant’s progress, it was also about tracking my own. Tyra dropped weekly gems on how to work the camera. By the end of the first few cycles, I’d learned how to “smize,” work my angles, create a shape, slim my appearance, and a slew of other tips and tricks for the runway and the camera. If I ever won an ESPY (Excellence in Selfie Performance Yearly – see what I did there?) for my superb selfie taking skills, I’d surely thank Tyra and UPN before my mom and dad in my acceptance speech.
In addition to Tyra’s modeling tips, I’ve also learned that another secret to great photos is great makeup. Especially professional photos, and sometimes it is best to leave our makeup to the pros. Here are 4 reasons why you should get your makeup professionally done for your next (and every) photo shoot:
1. PROFESSIONAL CAMERAS AND CELL PHONE CAMERAS ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL
Cell phone cameras have gotten increasingly better over the years. So much so, that some might even say that they rival many point and shoot cameras. Whatever the case, no one can currently say that they have risen to the quality of professional cameras. In the world of cameras, professional cameras are still king, and that is primarily because of their lenses. Professional photographers spend thousands on the lenses that allow them to take the amazing photos you see in their portfolios. They are also trained in light and lighting, which can also make a huge impact on the quality of your photo.
A professional camera and the right lighting can make you look amazing, but it can also accentuate any problem areas. Unlike Snapchat or Instagram, you cannot swipe on the contour filter, a flower crown, or click the Valencia filter to hide the fact that you do not have on any, or enough, makeup. Instead, your skin, any blemishes, discoloration, dehydration, under-eye circles, etc. are placed right there on front street.
2. PROFESSIONAL MAKEUP ARTISTS KNOW WHAT YOU NEED TO BE CAMERA READY
I know the professional camera thing above can be a little scary. You’re probably thinking, “lenses and lighting and skin discoloration, OH MY!” But not to worry, that’s why professional makeup artists are here. A professional makeup artist will know what products and finishes work best for professional cameras. How many times have you done your own makeup, gave yourself your personal stamp of approval in the mirror, and then someone took a photo of you with flash and you wondered who that ghost was staring back at you in the photo?! Your makeup didn’t look white or ashy in the mirror, so why is it appearing that way on camera? Maddening, I know, but it is because you are not using the right products.
Along the same lines, the makeup look that many of us know how to and are comfortable applying on our own is often times not enough for professional photos. Our go-to face beat could end up looking like barely there makeup on a professional camera because of the quality of the photo. Thus, requiring more makeup and coverage to look “natural” than we’d typically wear on a normal day. Hiring a professional makeup artist for your professional photo shoot would help avoid all of that, and ensures that you look like your best self on camera.
3. PROFESSIONAL MAKEUP BOOSTS CONFIDENCE
As much as I try to channel my inner Tyra in my professional photo shoots, the truth is, I still feel very awkward in front of a professional photographer. You give me a cell phone, and I can take amazing selfies all day, but you put a photographer in front of me and I forget what to do with my hands, my feet, my face, etc. It can get so awkward sometimes. It almost feels like I’m are being judged by this person AND their camera.
Oh, that’s just me? Oh, OK.
Getting my makeup professionally done definitely helps me overcome this professional photo shoot “stage fright.” I feel confident, bold and beautiful. And hey, even if I don’t quite know what to do with my hands, my face looks ah-mazing! *crops photo*
4. IT’S AN EXPERIENCE
In a post I once wrote, Get Your Beyonce On, I talk about how every day of Beyonce’s life is an occasion, and how while that might not be the case for normal folks like you and me, we still deserve to make the best of our occasions when they arise! Having a professional photo shoot is most definitely an occasion. In my mind, my professional photo shoots are the time when I truly get to get my Beyonce on. I think to myself, “this shoot must be what it feels like when Bey is on the red carpet.”
Beyonce had an entire glam squad for that event, so why shouldn’t you?! Well, the answer is that you should. You should most certainly sit back, relax, and allow yourself to be treated like a celebrity for the day. Besides, blending can be hard work. Why not let your makeup artist’s arms tire out before your shoot, not yours.
